WHAT IS ICED COFFEE?
Traditionally, iced coffee has been a blend of cold-brewed coffee, milk, and ice cubes, providing a refreshing and invigorating experience. It can also be served hot on the rocks. Iced coffee is also a variant of café frappé.
Origins of iced coffee
Interestingly, this chilled coffee treat traces its roots back to Algeria in the mid-19th century, where it first emerged under the name “Mazagran.”
“Mazagran,” named after the town of Mazagran, was concocted by the French army during the battle of Mazagran. Facing a scarcity of milk, the troops creatively mixed sweetened cold coffee with water to beat the scorching heat, thus creating the beloved iced coffee we cherish today.
What’s the difference between iced coffee and cold brew?
While iced coffee has become a popular option for coffee enthusiasts worldwide, there’s another sibling in the family of cold coffee beverages – the cold brew. Distinct from iced coffee, cold brew is prepared by brewing coffee with cold to room temperature water over an extended period, resulting in a smooth and less acidic flavour profile.
Ingredients
- One cup containing 2 espressos or 200 ml of your favourite ground coffee
- Milk
- Ice cubes
Material
- One tall glass
- A spoon
- Optional : A blender
Preparation
- Step 1 Start by preparing a satisfying 200ml cup of black coffee as per the instructions on the packaging. This will be prepared with boiled water. Once freshly brewed, give it some time to cool down entirely. Alternatively, if you’re in a rush for time, make a shorter but more intense cup. Then, fill a glass with ice and pour the coffee over the ice cubes to speed up the cooling down process.
- Step 2 Next, fill a big glass with ice. Pour the coffee over the ice.
- Step 3 Add in the milk, as desired. If you are looking for a more decadent treat, you can substitute the milk for cream or go 50/50.
- Step 4 If you wish to add a sweeter note, add sugar, simple syrup or maple syrup.
- Step 5 Now simply stir and drink.
- Step 6 If you are looking for a more smooth and foamy texture, simply throw all the ingredients into a blender and blend for a minute or two.
- Step 7 For an even more delicious treat, add a scoop of ice cream.
