Our Mochaccino Recipe

If you like to drink coffee and hot chocolate, and sometimes have a hard time choosing between these two, the mochaccino may be the perfect compromise for you. What is a mochaccino?
The mochaccino is a hot milky beverage from Italy, perfect for the winter season. So, what is in a mochaccino? It is made of coffee, hot chocolate, cocoa powder and milk.
It is usually served in a large transparent glass, so that you can watch the three different layers form.
You might find this drink under other names, such as moka coffee, mocaccino, mochhacino or mokaccino.
What are the differences between mochaccino and cappuccino?
You might still wonder what is the difference between a mochaccino and a cappuccino? It is very simple. Compared to the cappuccino, the mochaccino is mainly composed of hot chocolate, and consists of more milk foam.
How to make a mochaccino at home, with a bean-to-cup coffee machine?
Ingredients
- Your favourite coffee beans
- 1.5cl of hot chocolate
- Cocoa powder
- 14.5cl of whole milk
Material
- 1 bean-to-cup coffee machine with steam wand
- 1 milk jug
- 1 cup for your coffee
- 1 cup for your hot chocolate
- 1 mug or glass for the presentation
- 1 small whip or spoon
Preparation
- Step 1 Prepare your hot chocolate.
- Step 2 Then put some coffee beans in your espresso grinder.
- Step 3 Make a cup of coffee and set aside.
- Step 4 Put both of these beverages in the presentation glass or mug. Mix with a whip, sprinkle the cocoa powder on top.
- Step 5 Now, prepare your milk foam (with your steam wand). Fill the jug up halfway with milk.
- Step 6 Place the tip of your steam wand close to the spout of your jug and just below the surface of the milk.
- Step 7 Once the milk starts foaming, dip the steam wand into the milk, until it fills two-thirds of the jug.
- Step 8 Set aside the milk and clean your steam wand.
- Step 9 Tap the milk jug and mix until you obtain a smooth and even foam.
- Step 10 Pour your milk foam into your presentation cup, over the hot chocolate and espresso.
- Step 11 Now you can enjoy your Mochaccino!

For the hot chocolate, you can use 10g of cocoa powder and 3cl of milk.
How to make a mochaccino at home with a manual espresso machine?
Ingredients
- Your favourite coffee beans
- 1.5cl of hot chocolate
- Cocoa powder
- 14.5cl of whole milk
Material
- 1 manual espresso machine with steam wand
- 1 coffee grinder
- 1 tamping mat
- 1 grind distributor
- 1 tamper
- 1 scale
- 1 milk jug
- 1 cup for your coffee
- 1 cup for your hot chocolate
- 1 mug or glass for the presentation
Preparation
- Step 1 Prepare your hot chocolate and set aside.
- Step 2 Begin brewing. Grind 14g of coffee in your portafilter. Using your hands, spread the ground coffee more or less evenly in the portafilter.
- Step 3 Then use the grind distributor to ensure even tamping (2 to 3 turns)
- Step 4 Apply 15-20kg of pressure to your grind using your tamper, to compact your grind.
- Step 5 Before switching on your machine, perform a flush (the action of cleaning the filter of any grounds that may have remained and emptying the water group).
- Step 6 Insert the portafilter into the group and start brewing. Stop your extraction when your espresso weighs 28 to 42g.
- Step 7 Pour the two drinks into your presentation cup. Whisk well and sprinkle cocoa powder over the top.
- Step 8 Now, prepare your milk foam (with your steam wand). Fill the jug up halfway with milk.
