What is marocchino coffee?
A Marocchino is a layered coffee drink made with espresso, a dusting of cocoa, and frothy milk foam. Served in a small transparent glass, it not only tastes incredible but also creates a striking visual appeal with its distinct layers of espresso, milk, and chocolate.
The Marocchino’s balance of comforting cocoa and robust coffee makes it the ideal drink for colder months or as a luxurious treat anytime. Plus, with this easy Marocchino recipe, you can enjoy it anytime, whether it’s during a relaxing coffee break or as a decadent snack.
Where does the Caffe Marocchino come from?
Although its name means ‘Moroccan’ in Italian, marocchino is thought to have been created in Alexandria, Italy. Its name doesn’t refer to Morocco but rather to the drink’s colour, reminiscent of the sandy hues of the Moroccan desert.

Although its exact origins are unclear, one thing is certain the Marocchino has grown to be a staple in Italian cafés, admired worldwide for its irresistible blend of flavors and textures.
Mocha vs. Marocchino: What’s the difference?
While both the Marocchino and Mocha contain similar ingredients, they are quite different drinks. The Mocha, which came later, is much larger and has a milkier, sweeter profile. In contrast, the Marocchino’s smaller volume and layered approach provide a more concentrated, rich experience.
And what about other drinks? With its thick layers of cocoa, milk foam, and shot of espresso, this drink delivers a more intense chocolate-coffee flavour, making it stand out from other coffee drinks.
How to prepare a marocchino italiano
Ingredients
- Your favourite coffee beans
- 100 ml milk
- Cocoa powder
Material
- 1 bean-to-cup coffee machine with steam wand
- 1 milk jug
- 1 espresso cup
- 1 glass
Preparation
- Step 1 Pour hot water into your glass, then empty it. This will ensure that the cocoa stays on the sides of the glass.
- Step 2 Generously dust the inside of your glass with cocoa powder and set aside.
- Step 3 Froth 100 ml of milk in your jug using the steam wand on your coffee machine. Aim for a thick, velvety foam.
- Step 4 Put your frothed milk foam into the glass with the cocoa, without filling it completely to leave room for the espresso to be poured in. Set aside.
- Step 5 Brew a shot of espresso and carefully pour it over the milk foam, allowing the layers to settle.
- Step 6 Top your Caffè Marocchino with another sprinkle of cocoa powder for that final touch of indulgence.
- Step 7 Serve and enjoy!
MaxiCoffee tips for extra deliciousness
For the best Marocchino, we recommend using a coffee with a medium to dark roast, as these rich flavors pair perfectly with the chocolatey notes of the cocoa and the creaminess of the milk. If you want to take it up a notch, add a drizzle of hazelnut syrup or caramel sauce to your coffee before pouring it into the glass. It’s the ultimate treat!
