Our frappé coffee recipe

If you can’t get enough of your coffee even during summer, frappé coffee is the perfect recipe. There are different recipes for cold coffee, but they don’t need the same preparation. Very simple to prepare at home, with the frappé coffee, you will not need to leave your house to enjoy a cold and tasty drink. We explain you how to prepare it!
What is a frappé coffee?
Coffee can be brewed cold directly, like the cold brew. But there is also some cold drink based on hot coffeewhich are then cooled, like the frappé coffee. The frappé coffee owes is name to the way it is prepared. The term “frappé” is french and means “to shake” because the ingredients are usually mixed in a shaker to create a thin foam. Also called “Greek iced coffee”, this recipe combines the taste of coffee with fresh effect. But keep in mind: a frappé coffee is not the same as an iced coffee.
Why do we say “greek iced coffee” ?
The story goest that its inventor is a Nestlé employée who came to Greece during the International Exhibition in Thessaloniki in 1957. At that time, Nestlé wanted to sell chocolate drink to be prepared in a shaker. His reprentative couldn’t fint hot water for his coffee, so he thought of using the same technique by replacing the chocolate with coffee. A few decades later, the frappé coffee became a popular drink in Greece and Cyprys. This drink was then democratized in France during the Second World War. The real recipe of frappé coffee is prepared with instant coffee, water, sugar and sometimes milk. Depending on the amount of sugar, coffee or milk used, your frappé coffee will not be called the same, but the basic recipe remains the same. Try different options depending on your taste to find your perfect mix. The greek café latté is one of the simplest coffee recipes, In its original version, it is made without filter or coffee maker since the main ingredient is soluble coffee. The Frappuccino®, for example, became a registered trademark of Starbucks in 1995. This historic drink is often revisited, but first, we present the real recipe of frappé coffee, essential to master its variations.
How to do a frappé coffee with a coffee bean machine ?
Ingredients
- 20g of coffee beans
- 10 ice cubes
- 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar or 7 ml of liquid sugar, to add new tasty notes (optional)
- 20 cl of milk (animal or plant milk according to your preference) (optional)
Material
- A coffee bean machine
- A shaker
- A cappuccino cup
- A large glass
Preparation
- Step 1 Put coffee beans in your expresso grinder.
- Step 2 If you have a classic automatic coffee machine, all you have to do is pour 2 expressos. Otherwise the Double Expresso button or the Doppio founction can help you get your caffeinated drink faster.
- Step 3 Transfer the double expresso from your cappuccino cup to a shaker with ice cubes.
- Step 4 Top off your drink with powderer sugar or milk, as you prefer.
- Step 5 Shake the shaker for about 1 minutes to get a light foam on top.
- Step 6 Pour the mixture into a large glass and enjoy!
How to do a frappé coffee with a manual espresso machine?
Ingredients
- Your favourite coffee beans
- Ice cubes
- 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar or 7 ml of liquid sugar, to add new tasty notes (optional)
- 20 cl of milk (animal or plant milk according to your preference) (optional)
Material
- A manual espresso machine
- A coffee grinder
- A tamping mat
- An espresso distributor tool
- A tamper
- A scale
- A shaker
- A cappuccino cup
- A large glass
Preparation
- Step 1 Grind 20g of coffee in your filter holder.
- Step 2 Distribute and equalize the grind in your filter holder for a first time, use your hand to help yourself.
- Step 3 Use the espresso distributor tool in order to have an equal tamping (2 to 3 turns).
- Step 4 Use your tamper to apply 15 to 20 kg of pressure on your grind, in order to press your grind.
- Step 5 Before turning on your percolator, start a flush (action of cleaning the filter of the potential marc which could have remained and to empty the water group).
- Step 6 Insert the filter holder into the group and start the extraction. Stop the extraction when your beverage weighs 40 to 60 g.
- Step 7 Transfer the double expresso from your cappuccino cup to a shaker with ice cubes.
- Step 8 Top off your drink with powderer sugar or milk, as you prefer.
- Step 9 Shake the shaker for about 1 minute to get a light foam on top.
- Step 10 Pour the mixture into a large glass and enjoy!
