Our Chai latte recipe
Written by Julie
Chai is originally a term derived from the Mandarin word “cha” which means “tea” in South Asia. It has become one of the essential comforting hot drinks of the winter, the chai latte exists in various recipes. Today we’re offering you our own recipe for a tasty homemade chai latte that’s both simple and delicious!
WHAT IS A CHAI LATTE?
All the flavours of India in one drink! Indeed, chai latte is originally a drink used as a remedy in traditional Hindu medicine. The chai latte is made of milk, black tea, sugar and, of course, spices. A delicious drink that makes you travel, above all, can vary from one recipe to another! Different versions exist, as different spice mixtures are possible. However, the chai latte often keeps the same base: black tea, cardamom, cloves, ginger and cinnamon.
HOW TO PREPARE A CHAI LATTE?
Ingredients
- 2 black tea bags of your choice
- 250 ml whole milk (or half milk, half coconut milk)
- 250 ml water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 cloves
- 4 green cardamom pods
- 3 black peppercorns
- 1 star anise
- 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger or a few slices of fresh ginger
- 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
Material
- A saucepan
- A fine strainer
- 2 tea cups
Preparation
- Step 1 Boil the water with the peppercorns, cardamom pods, ginger, cinnamon, star anise and cloves for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Step 2 Lower the heat slightly and add the black tea. Let the mixture steep again for about 3 minutes at 90 °C.
- Step 3 Stir well and add the milk.
- Step 4 Put the pan back on medium heat to heat up the milk.
- Step 5 For an even better taste, you can froth the milk before adding it. And if you have a steam nozzle on your coffee machine, even better!
- Step 6 Strain the remaining mixture through a fine sieve and serve. Add sugar if necessary.
- Step 7 Decorate with a sprinkling of cinnamon to taste.
- Step 8 All you have to do is enjoy!
MaxiCoffee tips for an even better taste
If you don’t have all the spices you need to make this recipe, don’t hesitate to replace them with syrup or powder. In addition, you can use a milk frother to make your milk foam. There are also instant chai preparations, but also chai teas in bags and in bulk, if you want to save time. Would you like to make your chai latte even tastier? We recommend adding maple syrup. In your recipe, simply bring the milk and maple syrup to the boil. Finally, this drink can be reheated (and therefore re-cooked) several times during the day… It will be even better!
