WHAT IS AN AFFOGATO?
Does the name remind you of Italy? This recipe was born in Naples. Its full name “affogato al caffè” can be translated as “drowned in coffee”. This drink merges two worlds: coffee and dessert. The affogato is traditionally made with espresso coffee and vanilla ice cream.
HOW TO MAKE AN AFFOGATO?
If you have a coffee bean machine (or espresso grinder)
Ingredients
- Vanilla ice cream
- Your favourite coffee beans
Material
- A glass
- An espresso cup
- An ice cream scoop or a spoon
Preparation
- Step 1 Put some coffee beans in your espresso grinder.
- Step 2 If you have a classic automatic coffee machine, you will only need to make 1 espresso.
- Step 3 Take your ice cream scoop and form a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Step 4 Place the scoop of vanilla ice cream in the glass.
- Step 5 Pour the hot coffee over the scoop of ice cream.
- Step 6 You can now enjoy your affogato!
If you have a manual espresso machine
Ingredients
- Vanilla ice cream
- Your favourite coffee beans
Material
- A coffee grinder
- A tamping mat
- A grind distributor
- A tamper
- A scale
- A glass
- An espresso cup
- An ice cream scoop or a spoon
Preparation
- Step 1 Grind 14g of coffee in your filter holder.
- Step 2 First, distribute and even out the ground coffee in your filter pan, more or less evenly, using your hands.
- Step 3 Then use the grind distributor to ensure that the coffee is evenly packed (2 to 3 turns).
- Step 4 Use the tamper to apply 15 to 20 kg of pressure to the coffee grind, in order to compact the grind.
- Step 5 Before switching on your percolator, start a flush (action to clean the filter of any grounds that may have remained and to empty the water group).
- Step 6 Insert the filter holder into the group and start the extraction.
- Step 7 Stop the extraction when your drink weighs 28-42 g.
- Step 8 Take your (ice cream) spoon and form a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Step 9 Place the scoop of vanilla ice cream in the glass.
- Step 10 Pour the hot coffee over the scoop of ice cream.
- Step 11 You can now enjoy your affogato!
